Drug Rehab Treatment
Drug and alcohol treatment begins during a crucial time of recovery from
substance abuse. Even before the substances have left their system, those
who attend treatment start learning about the disease of addiction and the
process of recovery. Many changes occur during this phase of physical and
psychological withdrawal from substances; this period is the time during
which most clients would return to using if they weren’t in treatment.
It is important for them to learn to recognize and manage these emotions
for later relapse prevention.
A
variety of treatment and rehabilitation programs are available for different
stages and intensities of substance abuse. In-patient programs are designed
for individuals in later stages of chemical dependency who need the most
assistance in their recovery and their daily lives. Many forms of out-patient
programs are also available, ranging from intensive out-patient (that require
as many hours as in-patient) to single-patient single-counselor weekly sessions.
Residential medical programs, short stay, and detoxification programs are
also available. Additionally, specialty programs focus on different aspects
of chemical dependency such as cross-addictions, family support, teenagers,
and executives.
The core of any rehabilitation
program, though, is long-term sobriety. This goal is reached through group
therapy sessions, one-on-one counseling, and even psychotherapy. Education
about the causes and effects of substance abuse help the individual understand
themselves; learning about such topics as recovery skills, high-risk situations,
triggers, self-control, and surroundings have been shown to help prevent
relapse and maintain sobriety. Family education groups help the individual
and family understand the impact substance abuse has had on the family and
how its effects can be reversed. For those individuals who need further
help after treatment, aftercare programs are useful. These programs provide
a safe, sober living situation that smoothes the transition back to complete
independence; they can last as long as needed and provide increasing levels
of freedom and responsibility.
