or concerns you may have. This site is oriented towards anyone who suspects
that they or a loved one may have a problem with drugs or alcohol.
Substance abuse in its many forms has been an increasing problem in the
United States for many years now. The government has been working to combat
chemical dependency and substance abuse since even before the National Prohibition
Act of 1919. Until recently, the only government solution has been to outlaw
substance abuse and to fill jails and prisons. Only in the past twenty years
have we come to realize that chemical dependency is a disease and should
be medically treated as such. Residential, in-patient, and out-patient rehabilitation
programs now provide a successful alternative to prison for drug and alcohol
offenders. Where before the only choice was to follow the vicious cycle
of addiction towards prison or death, these programs have given many individuals
the opportunity to change and restore their lives.
How can one tell
if they or someone they know are addicted or are at risk to become an addict?
The current medical criteria for chemical dependency are a loosely defined
set of factors based largely on a combination of usage amounts, substance
use habits, and perceptions of self and others about their use. As many
other informal forms of evaluation exist as there are forms of addiction
(of which there are a great many). In short, however, most of these evaluations
are concerned about one question: has the person experienced negative consequences
as a result of their drug use or drinking, and if so, how did they react?
If the answer to the first part of the question is yes, then a more thorough
evaluation may be warranted. If you suspect you or someone you know may
have a problem with substance abuse, we strongly encourage you to speak
with one of our counselors at 1-800-231-6025
